Rates from PayPal’s fee schedule for Germany, as of 15 July 2026. Not an official PayPal service. Non-binding, no guarantee. Methodology and sources

What this calculator does not cover
  • individually negotiated merchant rates and rates for very high volumes
  • pay by invoice, direct debit and card payments via the virtual terminal
  • currency conversion: PayPal adds 3% to the base exchange rate; the exact rate changes daily
  • accounts outside Germany

Which rate applies?

  • Goods and services (2.49% + €0.35): for example when you sell something on Kleinanzeigen and get paid directly via PayPal choosing “goods and services”. The buyer has buyer protection; you pay the fee.
  • PayPal Checkout (2.99% + €0.39): the PayPal button in an online shop.
  • Micropayments (4.99% + €0.09): a separate rate for small amounts that you have to apply for. It only beats Checkout below €15.00 and “goods and services” below €10.40.
  • Friends and family: free within Germany if no currency is converted. Abroad it costs 5%, at least €0.99 and at most €3.99, paid by the sender.

For payments from abroad, surcharges apply: none from the EEA, 1.29% from the UK, 1.99% from the USA and Canada, 2.99% from all other countries.

How much do I need to charge?

Fee = amount × rate + fixed fee (rounded to the cent)
Target = smallest amount A for which A − fee(A) ≥ the amount you want

For €100.00 to arrive after a Checkout payment, you need to charge €103.48. Because PayPal rounds the fee to the cent, the calculator finds the smallest amount that really is enough.

Fees on refunds

If you refund a payment, PayPal returns the percentage fee but keeps the fixed fee. For a credit card chargeback an additional €16 applies.

Frequently asked questions

How high are PayPal fees in Germany in 2026?

For payments for goods and services within Germany 2.49% plus €0.35, for Checkout in an online shop 2.99% plus €0.39. On €100.00 that is €2.84 or €3.38.

Is “friends and family” free, and why not use it for purchases?

Within Germany without currency conversion, yes. You still should not use it for purchases: there is no buyer protection, and PayPal’s terms exclude commercial use.

Who pays the PayPal fee?

For payments for goods and services always the recipient, i.e. the seller or merchant. For “friends and family” payments abroad, the sender pays.

Do I get the fee back if I refund a payment?

Only the percentage part. PayPal keeps the fixed fee, such as €0.35 or €0.39.

What does a payment from the USA cost?

With Checkout 2.99% + 1.99% international surcharge + €0.39. On €100 that is €5.37. If paid in dollars, currency conversion comes on top.
